A 28-YEAR-OLD youth shot himself dead in Bareilly district soon after he sent a video detailing his plan to commit suicide to his two brothers and two friends. The deceased, Sumit Chauhan, also alleged in the video that his wife and in-laws were threatening to implicate him in a false case of dowry.
Sumit, who committed suicide at his house at Ashok Nagar of Baradari area on Thursday evening, was a private taxi driver. He and his wife Kirti had got married around five years ago and have a five-year-old son.
In the video, Sumit has alleged that his in-laws had borrowed Rs 1 lakh from him. As he wanted the money to be returned, this led to a discord among the couple.
Following this, Kirti went to stay with her parents last Friday at Sharma Nagar. On Thursday, Sumit reportedly visited his wife to bring her back but she refused. According to Sumit’s relatives, he committed suicide two hours after returning home.
While police have been handed over the video — purportedly containing Sumit’s dying declaration — no case of abetment of suicide has been lodged as the police claimed none of his relatives have lodged a complaint in this regard. When contacted, Baradari police Station House Officer Rajendra Singh said: “The family members of the deceased have said they would take a decision over lodging a complaint after the final rites are over.”
