If you were worried about taking your e-reader in the bath or to the beach, Kobo has launched a version that it says can beat the elements.

The Kobo Aura H20, set to retail for $179.99, will be waterproof in a metre of water for up to 30 minutes “with the port cover closed.” It will also have a dustproof design and antiglare display, making reading possible outdoors in sunny locations.

“When we asked our customers what held them back from reading more ebooks, many told us they love to read in the bath, by the pool or on the beach, but believed that devices and water didn’t mix,” said Michael Tamblyn, president and chief content officer of Kobo, in a statement. “As we dug deeper, we found that more than 60 per cent of customers surveyed said they would love to be able read near water without worry.”

Kobo launches new Aura HD e-reader

Making your ebook or other devices water resistant has previously been possible with special cases and wraps, but Kobo says this is the first waterproof premium E Ink e-reader.

The Aura H20 will also have an HD display of 265 dpi on a 6.8-inch touchscreen with upgraded Carta E Ink technology and a battery life of up to two months.

The Reading Life interface will continue to be available on the Aura H20, allowing readers to customize fonts, access recommendations based on their activity and preferences, and take notes, highlight text, make bookmarks and track stats.

It will be available starting Oct. 1, but for those who can’t wait, preorders will be available as of Aug. 27 at select retailers and at kobo.com.
